“ On a deeper level, I liked how the story portrayed the camaraderie of the Harmony Enforcers, the sibling love, the clean romance, and the division between the nobles and the commoners.” – Olga Markova, Readers’ Favorite
A new age looms over the land of Mathsmagica, where equations weave the fabric of reality, and the past whispers through the shadows.
As the enigmatic figure known as Avos emerges, old alliances and buried secrets ignite a series of cataclysmic events. The creatures of legends, the dragons, have returned. With motives shrouded in mystery, but their impact undeniable. As their influence spreads, the world trembles under a magic-threatening spell unlike anything seen before.
Amid this turmoil, Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah continue their studies and duties, unaware that their lives are poised to intersect with destinies far greater than their own. Yet, shadows move in the periphery – a being born of flesh and magic struggles to find his place in a world that fears him, and a truth long thought buried threatens to upend everything.
Three paths converge in Mathsmagica: a young man grappling with his lineage and powers, a shadow from the past with a plan to rewrite the rules of magic, and a living anomaly desperate to find purpose in a hostile world. Their fates intertwine within the walls of a mysterious, ever-changing stronghold known as The Castle of Wax, where there cost of power is measured in blood.
As forces beyond comprehension clash, Mathsmagica’s very essence is at stake. Can The Light prevail, or will its shadow cast a darkness too deep to escape?

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow by Daniel Georgiev is the second book that expands on the magical world of the Mathsmagica series. The story centers on Sova, his sister Nilah, and his love interest Evie, who are bound by cursed keychains as the city’s deputies of magical law and are tasked with confronting rogue magic users. Some political factions view Sova as a threat as he struggles with the spirit of Sovah, a mage whose essence remains within him. Avos, a devoted disciple of Sovah, thinks his master is still alive. He discreetly helps the endangered dragons because of this belief. They conspire to perform a massive magical ritual with the goals of restoring dragon supremacy, reviving Sovah’s power, and possibly destroying Mathsmagica. The Harmony Enforcers bolster their numbers by including a necromancer and a powerful artificial entity to combat these dangers and anomalies. Their capabilities for crucial missions are intended to be strengthened by this move. Will Sova and his expanded team survive the impending attack on Mathmagica? Or will the city be destroyed and the Harmony Enforcers vanquished when Avos and the dragons accomplish their deadly plan?
Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow reveals a magical, adventurous, and intellectually stimulating world built upon a rigorous system of spells and mathematical formulas. It explores balancing the duality of darkness and light, power, responsibility, identity, destiny, trust, loyalty, friendship, intimacy, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of the past. The narrative boasts dynamic pacing and visually dramatic moments that intensify during pivotal points, escalate the stakes, and move the plot forward. High-octane sequences are offset by quieter, emotionally resonant moments, often centering on the core trio of Harmony Enforcers. New characters and creatures enrich the team’s internal dynamics and foster friendships, rivalries, and maturity. Relationships are central, shaping major and minor characters who exhibit multidimensional traits and compelling personal arcs. This emphasizes transformation through diverse experiences. Daniel Georgiev’s writing is vivid, metaphorical, emotionally charged, and immersive. His impressively poetic and lyrical prose is clear and detailed, effectively conveying imagery, intense emotions, and atmosphere. It’s also complemented by its well-executed illustrations, which harmonize with the text and incorporate archives that explain the lore or spell mechanics. The book is recommended for teen, young adult, and adult readers who appreciate complex magical systems, character-driven fiction, and riveting cliffhangers. It’s a fresh take on magic with heart, brains, and action with more depth than the average young adult fantasy.

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow by Daniel Georgiev is the gripping second installment in the Mathsmagica series, where magic and mathematics intertwine. Harmony Enforcers Sova, Evie, and Nilah continue their studies, unaware of the looming chaos whilst dragons resurface and threaten to change reality as they know it. Meanwhile, Avos, a shadowy figure, seeks to manipulate events to rewrite the rules. While the trio’s journey takes them to the Castle of Wax, a labyrinth of magic and danger, the characters must face unimaginable trials and unlock hidden powers. This fast-paced fantasy is filled with daring adventures, intricate magic, and poignant themes of unity and destiny.
Author Daniel Georgiev has a knack for making concepts work together, and there’s a clear passion for the world of mathematics in this inventive novel that becomes more infectious the more you read on. The fusion of math and magic as a central concept creates a refreshingly original fantasy world where things make logical sense, but everything is new and exciting. I liked the central trio of characters, and their struggles with identity and the power of friendship are themes that readers can relate to. I’m a big fan of dark and mysterious characters, so Avos was a real treat to explore as a complex figure haunting their every move, with genuine motivations beyond just chaos for the sake of it. Attention to detail is also present in the fast-moving plot, which is full of twists and high-stakes battles with cinematic moments on every page. Overall, Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow is a fantastic sequel novel that enhances the story world and characters even more. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this highly recommended fantasy series.

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow by Daniel Georgiev is an atmospheric YA magical fantasy blended with clean romance. The story unfolds in the sovereign futuristic city of Mathsmagica. At the center of Mathsmagica stands The Academy, where the finest of mages are trained. Sova, Evie, and Nilah are students and the Harmony Enforcers at the Academy. Their role is to protect Mathsmagica against evil spells and attacks from dragons, celestial lunatics, and dark mages conspiring to conquer the world. When the Academy’s High Arcanist spots an explosion of an unknown type of mana, the Academy’s Director sends the Harmony Enforcers on a peace-making mission to discover the source of the disruption and resolve the turmoil. But will the magical trio led by Sova succeed?
For me, Daniel Georgiev’s Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow is a magical treat on par with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Otherworldly warriors, mages, dragons, mystical creatures, necromancers, magical spells, and colorful standoffs of mages kept me turning the pages. The illustrations and descriptions were cinematically atmospheric, and the storyline was hugely entertaining, especially the magical dakes, the trial at the Guild of Light, and the battle at the Wax Castle. On a deeper level, I liked how the story portrayed the camaraderie of the Harmony Enforcers, the sibling love, the clean romance, and the division between the nobles and the commoners. But most of all, I liked the fine line the story drew between good and evil. I highly recommend this novel to young adults and older fans of magical fantasy.
